Welcome to Juniper class, I hope everyone is looking forward to being back together as the Year 5 class at Maple Tree. It is going to be a fun but busy year learning about our new topic of Ancient Greece and getting the children ready to move up to year 6 next summer. The children have all come back bubbling and looking forward to the year ahead which is really encouraging.
As mentioned, our topic for the autumn term is Ancient Greece, which will be linked to across the curriculum. We will be looking at the mystery and adventure of myths and legends in English, the gods and goddesses and some significant events, such as the Olympics, in History and the distinctive decorations and clothing of the Greeks in Art.
In Maths, the year will begin with place value and understanding digits up to 1,000,000 and later in the year perimeter and area, encouraging the children to develop their understanding and to be able to apply their knowledge to reason and solve problems. It is important that the children still practice their times tables which they can do on TT Rockstars, which all the children have accounts for.
During this term the focus for Science we will start by looking at magnets, which is a unit that was missed due to the lockdown for Covid-19. We will then be moving on to the life cycles of living things, such as humans and plants, and how they all live in their habitats. There will also be a focus on how humans develop through the years to old age.

P.E: Juniper have P.E on a Wednesday afternoon with our P.E teacher, Miss Milne. Please ensure your child has a full, named P.E kit: navy short, yellow t-shirt, navy/black jumper and joggers and trainers. Long hair needs to be tied up and jewellery is removed.
Spellings: Weekly spellings will be given out on a Monday and the children tested on them the following Monday. The spellings are different every week and will be stuck in to their yellow books. House points will be rewarded if full marks are achieved on the spelling test.
Reading: All children are expected to read their school reading book for at least 20 minutes a day, please can this be recorded in their homework diary. When your child has completed their book, it is their responsibility to tell their class teacher, who will then allow them to change their reading book. It is also your child’s responsibility to take AR quizzes in order for them to reach their targets each term. When the AR target for the class is achieved, all children will receive a treat of their choice.
